Celebrating 100 years of GF Smith paper

Final Design

I chose this as my final design due to the fact that at the begginnning of the brief in my sketch book i stated that three elements that i wish to take into my final design will be abstract, clean and pure. Therefore i believe i have managed to capture these elements in this design.

Poster Designs ...

Here are a couple of layouts that i played with before creating my final poster design...

Although i do like these designs i don't believe they represent GF Smith to its fullest.

More type ...

Big Caslon

I shall be using this in my final poster design as i believe it represents GF Smith well as it is clear, professional, elegant and easily read.

Research into type...

Shiny Binary..... Nik Ainley

Whilst studying physics at imperial college in London Nik Ainley taught himself how to use photoshop in his spare time and now produces personal and commissioned work. His work attracts alot of attension and has been featured in mangazines, websites, books and exhibitions. These are jus a few of his type pieces...

I find his work absolutely amazing and truly inspiring. Simply the fact that he taught himself everything he knows is out of this worldddd.

100th Anniversary of GF Smith Paper / Poster Campaign

The next part of the brief was to design and construct a poster celebrating 100 years of GF Smith Paper Company. I had to create a poster taking into consideration how photography can be used to compose and frame paper constructions.
My poster must contain '' 100 Years of GF Smith Paper, Design Museum, 01-31 July 2011 "

So what is GF Smith Paper ? information taken from (http://www.gfsmith.com/about)

GFSmith have been trading as specialty paper merchants from their warehousing and manufacturing base in Hull, East Yorkshire for over 100 years.

GFSmith source, develop & manufacture some of the most unusual papers for the Graphics and Printing Industries, promoting new papers for a wide range of applications.

These range from simple business cards, to letterheads, folders, promotional brochures, report & accounts, greetings cards & packaging. Indeed wherever there is a need for paper there is a need for GFSmith.

Personally i have found that the GF Smith posters that i have observed have all been eye catching and bold, here are some examples ...

Its been a long time coming...

My final sculpture ....

Further development on my final piece ...

although the sculpture i have created is aesthetically pleasing, i knew that it would be hung in the atrium which is a huge space in the university and i didn't want my piece to look lost and instead make quite an impact. Therefore i continued developing and allowed my sculpture to grow...

  • first sculpture is based on a 10cm width by 10cm height
  • second is 7.5cm width by 7.5cm height
  • finally the third is 5cm width by 5cm height, exactly half the size of my initial piece.
